Brighton Surgery Center has a 32 hours a week position available for a registered nurse in our pre and post operative department. Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a similar position. Duties and responsibilities include the following:
The Registered Nurse in the Pre-Anesthesia Holding area the PACU and Recovery Lounge will provide optimum patient care based on assessment of patients physical and psychosocial needs. He/she is responsible for implementation of the patients plan of care, including explanation of surgical procedures, required teaching and communication with other team members. He/she will provide a positive and professional atmosphere so as to enhance the patients’ surgical experience and provide for smooth functioning of BSC.
Pre-Op:
- Prepares the patient undergoing a procedure at BSC. She will be knowledgeable and capable of explaining all procedures and provide adequate teaching when necessary.
- Preparation includes, but is not limited to, assessing, planning, organizing and implementing the plan of care specific to the patient and BSC policies. Will seek out necessary information to complete plan of care to avoid foreseeable problems.
- Takes primary responsibility for:
- Greeting patient/family
- Completing Pre-Op orders
- Starting IV’s
- Administering Pre-Op medications
- Ensuring procedure consent meet DOH/BSC criteria
- Ensures optimal patient safety during their stay at BSC
- Reviews Post-Op discharge instructions with patient/family when relevant.
- Works collaboratively with other team members (i.e. Medical Director, Physician, Clinical Manager, Charge Personnel, Business Office, and Nursing Staff.)
- Responsible for contacting patients for the following day’s surgical schedule. The RN will give detailed instructions which include, but are not limited to, time of arrival and NPO status while adhering to HIPPA guidelines. They will be responsible for reviewing surgical charts, insuring that procedure site and side are confirmed with patient and the appropriate forms are correct. Any problems will be addressed and solved when possible prior to day of surgery.
- Assume responsibility for professional growth by participation in continuing education programs. Required annual mandatories will be completed and documented by the first of December of each calendar year.
- Chart documentation is the responsibility of distributing, counting, wasting and adding narcotics to daily count sheet. She will determine type and amount of narcotic to be given to each Anesthesiologist or CRNA for daily surgical cases. A reconciliation of all narcotics will occur at the end of the day with another RN ensuring count is accurate.
- Will act as a preceptor to new employees; orienting, teaching and supervising skills and growth. Reports to charge nurse progress and problems as they occur.
Post Op:
- Recover patients receiving general anesthesia
- Notifies the anesthesiologist immediately of any problems, demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively.
- Recovery includes:
- Airway management (knowledgeable with oral airway, oxygen, wall suction, yankers).
- Competent in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support.
- Treating special needs of patients emerging from anesthesia, acquiring additional support when needed.
- Competent with the use of all monitoring equipment.
- Familiar with Code Cart Contents.
- Assess, plan, organize and implement the plan of care specific to the patient and BSC policies. Physician orders will be implemented and carried out. Pain score will be assessed and documented. Patients’ physical and psychosocial needs will be addressed and met prior to discharge.
- Determines when the patient fulfills the criteria for discharge to Phase II (i.e. Alert and oriented or returning to baseline status, O2 Sat > 92% [0 O2 reguired], VSS, PAR score above ____ ). The nurse will then continue to care for the patient or report off to a Phase II RN for remainder of recovery. Refer to RN Post-Op Pre-Discharge Phase II overview.

Must be currently registered to practice professional nursing in NYS, current license.
